A shrub or small tree up to 10 m. high, with spreading branches, evergreen leaves and monoecious flowers.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It grows, often abundantly, on chalk downs, heaths and moors throughout the British Isles, but is rare or absent in many regions.

Floraison France : fl mai, fr. automne de la 2' année. -Les fruits, toniques et diurétiques, servent à préparer une confiture et une liqueur usitée dans le Nord.

Flowers: Male flowers in cones about 8 mm long, with 5-6
whorls of scales; female flowers in cones about 2 mm wide, solitary in the axils of the leaves.
Flowering UK: Mid May late July.

Feuilles : étalées, verticillées par 3 et disposées sur 6 rangs, toutes linéaires en alêne, insensiblement atténuées en pointe fine et piquante, articulées, non décurrentes, marquées d'un seul sillon blanchâtre en dessus, obtusément carénées et sillonnées en dessous;

spiny apex, spreading at right angles to the stem, concave, with a white central band above.

Cônes : noirs-bleuâtres et glauques à la maturité, globuleux, assez petits (5-7 mm), longuement dépassés par les feuilles.
